Students' Movie on "Sustainable Value Creation" Project Assembly Technology and Factory Management

Students of the Department Assembly Technology and Factory Management at TU Berlin spend one semester working on industrial and research projects, guided closely by the department's research engineers. This project work aims at applying theoretical knowledge to practical cases as an integral part of engineering education. In the winter semester 2012/2013 the CRC 1026 project "Public Awareness" set the unusual project task to produce a movie about sustainable value creation to test media production as a teaching method. The idea was that since media and media production are seen as attractive fields by most young people, an own engagement could stipulate their motivation of acquiring specific knowledge in order to present it in an exciting format.
Challenge
Didactical media presentation of sustainable value creation.
Goal
The outcome of the project is an amusing movie that explains sustainable value creation to children and teenagers age 10-14.

Tasks

  • Identify and get acquainted with the relating topics
  • Write a script
  • Produce the movie

While the theory of a high motivation level due to the task of media production was confirmed, this motivation was mainly focused on media production possibilities rather than on the examination of the movie's content. Therefore it could not be affirmed as an effective teaching tool with respect to complex content.
